Brix to specific gravity calculator
Refractometers read Brix; recipes and hydrometers use specific gravity. Convert one to the other for a wash or wort that hasn’t started fermenting.
Gravity
1.083SG
20.0 °Bx is a gravity of 1.083.
°Bx
SG
How it works
Brix is the percentage of sugar by weight. These are the usual fits to the sugar tables:
SG = 1 + Brix ÷ (258.6 − (Brix ÷ 258.2) × 227.1)
Brix = ((182.4601 × SG − 775.6821) × SG + 1262.7794) × SG − 669.5622
From 0 to 30 °Bx (1.000 to 1.129) the two agree to within 0.02 °Bx. Plato is within 0.1° of Brix over that range, so the same figures serve for °P.
Worked example
20.0 °Bx is a gravity of 1.083, and a gravity of 1.080 is 19.3 °Bx.
Good to know
- Once fermentation starts, alcohol skews a refractometer’s reading and these conversions no longer hold. Use a hydrometer from then on.
- Below 1.000 there is no sugar left for Brix to measure.
- The sugar wash calculator turns a target gravity into the sugar to weigh out.
